The New Salem Volunteer Fire Department is a 100% volunteer department that is located in Menallen Township, Pennsylvania and covers an area of rural, suburban and agricultural community that is located approximately 50 miles south of Pittsburgh.
In addition, we provide mutual and automatic aid to surrounding fire departments. We average approximately 300 calls annually and serve a population of around 4700 people. We have a roster of 20 active firefighters, all of our firefighters are trained under the NFPA 1001 standards to the Firefighter I level and at least 10 are trained to the Firefighter II level at this time. Each member is trained to the HAZMAT Operations level in accordance to NFPA 472 and we also have 10 members trained and certified as Vehicle Rescue Technicians.
We operate on a budget of nearly $135,000 annually which is mainly raised by members of the department through various fund raising activities. Our main staple of fundraising is the annual "Hog Roast", we are well known for our sandwiches throughout the tri-state area!
